Matt Edwards

PE, LEED AP BD+C

Principal

When Matt Edwards walks into a facility, he sees a series of technical questions answered and solutions discovered. The design process is a constant effort of matching invention to function and overcoming challenges, and the manifestation of the design process into a concrete user experience is what keeps the work he does at ME exciting, he says. “We are problem solvers working in an endlessly challenging environment.”

But ME’s work is more than a technical exercise, Matt explains. He may walk through a building with an engineer’s eye, but he knows that what ME does impacts the experience of people who aren’t coming into the space with design challenges in mind. Buildings are more than drawings and designs. They are real places used by real people. “We create places that support people in a multitude of ways, and our projects have a lasting effect on people over time.”

Being a part of a team that creates that lasting effect is what makes ME a special place for Matt. Technical problems aren’t tackled in isolation, they are overcome by teams, he says. “We work for and with highly educated and talented people that are all working toward a common goal. That’s hard to beat.”

It doesn’t have to be a large-scale project to reveal how important that teamwork is. At the Wyoming Game and Fish Laboratory in Laramie, the team was tasked with creating multiple labs, scientific work spaces, and administrative spaces all packed into a relatively small space. The project, Matt says, “stretched the design limits of the MEP systems and stands as a prime example of how important a holistic team approach is.”

That project is also a facility that touches on one of his favorite pastimes: fly fishing, something he places alongside skiing with his family and watching his kids play sports as a way of stepping outside the built environment, at least for a while.
