National Gymnastics Arena
Baku, Azerbaijan
One of a few gymnastics venues in the world that is also designed to host other sports and special events
The iconic 9,000-seat arena was inaugurated by the President of Azerbaijan and the First Lady, who serve as the head of the Azerbaijan Gymnastics Federation. The £120 million (AZN130 million) arena is one of only a handful of bespoke gymnastics venues in the world. The facility is designed to host all gymnastics disciplines as well as other sports and events. It features retractable and movable seating tiers to vary capacity, a training hall for the national Azerbaijan gymnastics team, and physiotherapy and medical suites. At night dynamic lighting make the arena appear as three ribbons in Azerbaijan’s national colours fluttering over a stone plinth, with the lighting scheme also enabling the projection of lighting displays and dynamic imagery. Under-seat displacement ventilation keeps the bowl within temperature and ventilation flow rates, which is critical for rhythmic gymnastics.
