LAC+USC Medical Center

Los Angeles, CA, United States

State-of-the-art acute care medical center is the region’s primary trauma center with hospital and power plant designed to withstand high magnitude seismic events

$900M state-of-the-art, acute care medical center with nursing tower, outpatient building, diagnostic and treatment building, and a central plant. The power plant was placed below grade which added complexity to the design of air intakes and exhausts required for plant equipment. The use of power efficient and cost effective high-voltage generators and automatic transfer switches dramatically increased the reliability of the system and reduced significant material cost. The team worked closely with OSHPD, the manufacturer, and testing authority to design, approve, and install the first UL Listed ATS of the type used in the design.
