Building Performance Modeling

Modeling is a communication tool that efficiently informs decision making.

Energy Modeling

An integrated design process requires Building Energy Modeling analysis. From the initial concept to building occupancy, BEM analysis helps reduce energy usage and lower operating costs throughout the life of the building. Life cycle costing analysis allows the owner and design team to evaluate and prioritize different strategies for better decision making. We bring our knowledge of these tools to collaborate with the project team to optimize building envelope design options related to orientation, fenestration, shading devices, insulation, and natural and hybrid ventilation strategies, among others.

Airflow Modeling

Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling software is a powerful tool for evaluating airflow strategies. Simulations of air distribution and movement within a space, integrated with data about airflow temperatures, velocities, and thermal characteristics, helps optimize placement, performance, and design of HVAC system components. CFD airflow modeling allows for the virtual testing of design solutions within unique and critical spaces, including natural ventilation strategies, lab hood placement, critical exhaust systems, operating room air distribution, and arena and stadia bowl cooling and heating.

Daylight Modeling

Our lighting design studio uses sophisticated backwards ray tracing tools such as AGi32 and Radiance to develop optimal solutions for daylighting, luminaire placement, and aiming strategies. Our virtual models of proposed designs and photo-realistic renderings help clients visualize how lighting characteristics and lighting design decisions will affect the completed space.
