Ed brings fresh thinking to the challenges of complex critical systems and spaces. With over 20 years of experience in new construction and renovation, central chiller plants, air handling systems, normal and critical electrical systems, fire protection, plumbing, and critical care space upgrades, Ed’s approach ensures designs which optimally balance performance, value and cost.


He is skilled in planning for work in occupied spaces and, in particular, the precise phasing requirements needed to renovate critical care spaces or seasonal facilities with varying user demand. His creativity in adapting designs for environments where shut-downs are difficult or impossible is demonstrated, for example, in the comprehensive $50M multi-year MEP infrastructure replacement project for the Westchester Medical Center and in the $850M phased renovation of Madison Square Garden.


Ed is a graduate of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and manages the firm’s New York office.

Darren Briant, CEng

Darren is an energy efficiency strategist and innovator in sustainability. An electrical engineer with extensive experience in the design of major systems, Darren has specialist knowledge in the design of prestigious commercial, industrial, and leisure based developments ranging from 5,000m2 to 50,000m2. Over the past 10 years he has been responsible for the concepts and designs of some of the most significant commercial, healthcare, sports and leisure-based developments in the UK, including the O2 Arena and redevelopment of Wimbledon Centre Court.

Mike Day, PE, LEED AP
Principal

Mike is a Principal in the Denver office and leads our commissioning group out of that office. He has been employed with ME Engineers since 1990 and managed our Vail Valley office from 2000 to 2009. In that time he gained considerable experience in the design of mechanical systems for the high altitude environment and large-scale snow-melt systems. Mike served as chairman of Denver’s Building Department Mechanical Code Review sub-committee prior to moving to Vail. He is a Past President of the Rocky Mountain Chapter of ASHRAE and a current Director. Mike has also provided the designs for numerous NFL, NHL, MLB and NBA facilities as well as hospitals, hotels and high-end residences. He has unparalleled experience in the design of field heating and aeration systems for professional and collegiate facilities.


Mike earned a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from Montana State University.

Scott Gerard, PE, LEED AP
Principal & Vice President,

Scott is a Principal and leads our electrical engineering group. His experience includes everything from drafting, to plant engineer for NREL, to Principal in Charge for billion-dollar projects. Scott is always attuned to each client’s needs and makes communication a priority. He is a licensed Professional Engineer in 18 states and a LEED Accredited Professional.


Scott earned a Bachelor of Science in electrical engineering from the University of Colorado, Denver.

Leonard Gurule, PE
Principal

Leonard is a principal in our Denver Office and has been with ME Engineers since 1997. He has a broad range of experience in project types such as high-rise office buildings, healthcare, education, and critical facilities including data centers. He leads our electrical group in research laboratory and healthcare design. The critical nature of these types of facilities has given Leonard considerable experience in redundant electrical system designs. In addition, Leonard is a key member of our quality control process.


Leonard earned his Bachelor of Science in Engineering from Colorado School of Mines.

Mike Hart, PE, LEED AP
Principal and Chief Executive Officer, Board of Directors

Mr. Hart is a Principal and our CEO. He brings 25 years of experience in new construction and renovation including central chiller plants, air distribution systems, hydronic systems, CFD Analysis, fire protection and plumbing. Mike’s collaborative approach between ownership, architect and contractors provides projects with the best value and success.


He began his career in the design build industry in Chicago. This experience provided him early insight into the challenges and issues of constructability. He has worked on a wide array of projects including all manner of major league sports facilities where his experience in conditioning of retractable roof stadiums is unmatched in the world. A creative and flexible problem solver, Mike brings new and innovative ideas to his projects.


Mike is a graduate of Marquette University and manages the firm’s Denver office.

Lyle Hays, PE, LEED AP
Principal

Lyle Hays is a Principal in the Denver office with expertise in conventional and specialty mechanical systems, including energy recovery, medical gas systems and other systems for health care facilities. He is effective in balancing design with budget and in designing for the precise phasing requirements needed to keep critical care facilities in operation during renovations.


Lyle earned a Bachelor of Science in Architectural Engineering from Kansas State University

Paul Hillier, CEng
Principal

Paul has extensive experience in the design and installation of mechanical engineering services, including L&MTHW, heating, air conditioning, steam, gas, compressed air, vacuum, passive and green energy conservation issues. He has a proven track record for delivering value for money solutions for some of the world’s most prestigious projects, including the O2 Arena and Aviva Stadium. Over the past several years he has been responsible for the concepts and designs of major commercial-based developments.

A director of the firm’s London Office, Paul is a Chartered Engineer with an Energy Performance Certificate as a Low Carbon Consultant.

Sean Hira, PE
Principal

Sean is the Director of Electrical Engineering in Los Angeles and leads the collaboration with clients, consultants, and the design team. He developed and implements computer programs to calculate load, short-circuit, voltage drop, and Title 24 lighting compliance. He has led projects as diverse as the LA County + USC Medical Center, Staples Center arena, and the historic Griffith Observatory renovation. As an expert in the special requirements of large scale and specialty healthcare and lab facilities, Sean has developed unique solutions to common issues such as EMF and vibration isolation in labs and has broken the ground on techniques that reduce construction and maintenance costs, while increasing reliability of the electrical systems.

Chris Jones, RCDD
Principal, Board of Directors

Chris is a Principal and Director of the Technology Design Group. He defines the vision and strategy of how technology is considered, selected, and integrated on a project. His holistic approach considers architectural, construction, and budget requirements with an understanding of business, operational, and technical requirements for the owner. His technical experience includes 3D physical planning and design of technology infrastructure and systems such as: communications infrastructure, telephone systems (VoIP), converged data networks (WAN/LAN), wireless data networks (Wi-Fi/WLAN), distributed antenna systems (DAS), distributed television (IPTV), security systems, AV systems, and TV/radio broadcast. He routinely writes articles for industry magazines and provides AIA registered training and seminars.


Chris is a Registered Communications Distribution Designer (RCDD) and earned a Bachelor of Science in Architectural Engineering from Kansas State University.

Brian Kannady, PE
Principal

Brian is a Principal and has been with ME since 1998. He leads our Denver office’s healthcare and technology/lab design, while bringing a broad background and technical expertise to each project. His expertise includes absl and bsl 3 research lab design and meeting FGI/AIA design guidelines. Brian also provides quality assurance, design review, and design coordination. He places great importance on meeting deadlines, matching the designs to the budget, and project organization.


Brian graduated from the University of Wyoming with a Bachelor of Science in Architectural Engineering.

Darrell Lackey, PE, LEED AP
Principal

Darrell is a Principal, and Mechanical Group Manager with 35 years of experience in technical design and management. Darrell works closely with architects, owners and contractors in determining initial engineering requirements such as conceptual analysis, space planning, sustainable strategies, systems selection, economic evaluation of compared mechanical systems, constructability, and installed cost budgets and sees projects through completion. With extensive military and LEED project experience he is well versed in complying with AT/FP and sustainability standards and design practices.


Darrell earned a Bachelor of Arts in Architecture from the University of California, Berkeley.

Shane Lazaroff
Principal

Shane is a Principal and CFO of ME Engineers, based in our Denver office. He has been in the A/E/C industry for over 22 years, and prior to that he worked as an auditor for the U.S. Defense Contract Audit Agency.  Shane graduated from Colorado Mesa University in 1988 with a Bachelor of Science in Public Accounting and subsequently passed both the Certified Public Accountant (CPA) and Certified Management Accountant (CMA) exams. He has dedicated the majority of his post graduate accounting career to the engineering services industry.

Charlie Lengal III,
CxA, QCP, CPD, CCCA

Principal

Charlie is the Director of the Federal Projects Division of the firm and possesses a stout understanding of the Federal project procurement and contract implementation process anchored in 35 years of experience. He serves as the Quality Assurance and Quality Control manager on staff required by many projects, and often works directly with owners for boiler room retrofits, pump replacement projects, electrical upgrades for technology, air handling unit upgrades and other mechanical, plumbing, and electrical facility projects. As a Certified Commissioning Agent he offers superior capabilities to verify and enhance the productivity of a building’s operating system.


Charlie graduated from the University of Maryland with a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Science and is the Managing Principal for the Colorado Springs Office.

Roger Loomis, PE
Principal

Roger has been with ME as a Principal and Mechanical Project Manager since 1995. He began his career in the San Francisco bay area in the early 80’s in equipment sales and as a design/build mechanical contractor. Roger’s background in contracting gives him practical experience with construction, making him a key resource for ME’s design-build practice. Some of his notable projects include: Yankee Stadium, Miami Marlins, and the new 49ers Stadium. He brings personal attention and focus to each project.


Roger graduated from California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo with a bachelor of science in mechanical engineering.

George Lui, PE
Principal

George is a Mechanical Engineer and Principal of the firm. An imaginative problem solver, he has superior skills in conveying complex technical information in an easy to understand manner. With immense experience that encompasses all building types, he brings seasoned thinking to the challenges found in complex critical systems and facilities. George’s skill in project development and management ensures that project issues are resolved smoothly and in harmony with the client’s interests and goals.
George graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Hawaii.

Kevin Marschke
Principal

Kevin is a Principal and Director of the firm’s Event Services division. With over 28 years experience as a construction estimator, project manager, Senior Electrical Designer and craftsman, he fields strong practical skills to accomplish a successful event overlay installation. His responsibilities entail design, installation and operational management for the Electrical, Mechanical and IT services required for an event that are outside the normal uses of a facility. Kevin’s experience includes work on multiple Super Bowls, Olympic games and special conventions and other sporting events.

He holds a degree in Electrical Engineering & Architectural Design Technology from Prairie State College.

Bob McCoy, PE, LEED AP
Principal

Bob is a Principal and Electrical Project Manager with ME since 1991. Over the past 15 years, his primary responsibilities have been the technical review and verification of in-house designs, determination of project scope, conceptualization of new electrical systems, and the coordination and overall management of the project electrical teams. His background as a facilities engineer and manager of construction brings experience troubleshooting unique electrical systems. Bob’s particular strengths include attention to detail and personal investment in the success of each project.


Bob earned his Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from the University of Colorado.

John Neshek, PE
Principal

John has over 35 years of experience in project management and system design, and he possesses a comprehensive knowledge of leading edge, functional design for electrical engineering systems. John worked meticulously with all team members on the $900M Palomar Medical Center to achieve acclaimed levels of sustainability with state-of-the-art energy efficiencies and building control systems, developing extraordinary solutions to common and emerging design issues in the hospital environment.


His strengths in project management have earned the respect of clients, contractors and design team members through successful collaboration and leadership. Work as diverse as the Palomar Medical Center, the $93M renovation of the historic landmarked Griffith Observatory, and new facilities on the Amgen campus demonstrate John’s commitment to providing exceptional design while managing costs.


John graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from the University of Illinois.

Ted Prythero, PE
Principal

Ted brings 40 years of technical design experience and problem solving to each project at ME. He provides Quality Control and technical guidance for projects ranging from single family residences to retractable roof stadia. He has an acute understanding of large construction projects and the complexities of integrating mechanical systems with the architectural and structural features of the building to create an aesthetically pleasing, efficient, and comfortable facility.  Ted has managed numerous projects with varied technical difficulty and project delivery. Sustainable design  with appropriately applied engineering solutions has been his focus throughout his career.


Ted graduated from Purdue University with a Bachelor of Science in engineering.

George Reiher, PE, LEED AP
Principal

George is a principal in the Denver Office and has been employed with ME Engineers since 2000. George began his career in the construction field working for a general contractor, then working for a small architectural firm. This experience combined with his electrical and lighting design skills has provided him a unique understanding of the design and construction industry for over 20 years.


George graduated from the University of Colorado with a Bachelor of Science in Architectural Engineering – with an emphasis in Illumination.

Jeff Sawarynski, PE, LEED AP
Principal, Board of Directors

Jeff is a Principal in our Denver office, a creative problem solver for complex projects, and an outspoken supporter of environmentally friendly design. Jeff founded our Environmental Physics Group to seek better and more sustainable MEP design solutions and bring those ideas to reality. He has developed a diverse portfolio of project experience that includes the NHL’s first LEED-certified arena, MLB’s first LEED certified ballpark, and the first LEED-CS office tower on the west coast. He served as chairman of Denver’s Building Code Review Mechanical Code sub-committee, and was a member of Major League Soccer’s Venue Design Guide committee. Jeff has also contributed to the FIFA Technical Recommendations and Requirements and an industry design guide for sustainability. Jeff oversees our Kansas City and South American regional operations.


Jeff earned his Bachelor of Science in Architectural Engineering from Kansas State University.

Art Smith, PE, LEED AP

With the firm for over 20 years, Art is responsible for project electrical design and management. He has broad and comprehensive experience developing electrical distribution systems, fire alarm systems, and life-safety systems for various building types including significant work with sports facilities and high-rise hospitality/residential projects. His comprehensive hands on experience in construction administration activities, particularly for fast-track projects, gives him a seasoned perspective in the development and evaluation of value engineering, cost estimating, and oversight through construction and project closeout.


Art is a graduate of the University of Colorado Denver and a Principal and Lead Electrical Engineer in the firm’s Denver office.

Frank Stefan, PE, LEED AP

As the Managing Principal of the Los Angeles office, Frank is a proven leader with strong credentials of experience, communication skills, and the ability to lead. He is responsible for all design services provided by the office and provides leadership in project oversight, quality control and interdisciplinary coordination, and has assured the successful delivery of billions in construction value. Frank has extensive experience in a breadth of complex and challenging projects, including the highly sustainable Palomar Medical Center, Staples Center, and Santa Barbara Airport Terminal. A skilled project executive, Frank guides the team on a trajectory that balances innovation with practical thinking, working closely with the design team, contractors and construction managers in the planning and implementation of the work to ensure the highest level of quality and value for our clients.


Frank graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering from California State University Long Beach and holds an MBA from Pepperdine University.

Brian Unekis, PE
Principal

Brian is a Principal in the Denver office and has been with ME Engineers since 1998.  He has a wide variety of experience on many project types including retractable roof stadia, multi-building campuses, convention facilities, hospitality, research facilities and health/fitness.  Brian has expertise in management of large, fast track and complex project types including projects completed in international markets in Europe and the Middle East. He stresses building and maintaining client relationships while delivering successful, on-time projects and leads the firm's office in San Francisco.

Charles has over 28 years experience in the design of electrical systems and project management for a broad array of challenging projects. His work is noted for cost effective quality engineered systems which meet clients’ immediate needs and provide flexibility for future modifications. Examples include the $850M renovation of Madison Square Garden in which he brought increased value to the project and reduced construction costs by creative design and phasing strategies. He earns high client satisfaction through developed trust, meaningful relationships, and project commitment.

Jey is a Principal with a wide range of experience in the design, installation and management of mechanical and plumbing building services projects. He served as the project engineer for the prestigious Wimbledon Centre Court retractable roof project, and performed with distinction in leading the team through the many complexities of this complicated retrofit design with timely completion. Additional experience includes the O2 Arena and Wembley National Stadium.

Drew has a breadth of experience in commercial, public, sports and healthcare with expertise in medium voltage power distribution, sports lighting, environmental impact, and control systems. He has led electrical design and administration on such high profile projects as the Dallas Cowboys Stadium, University of Texas Arlington Event Center, and the H&R Block Office Tower where he demonstrated skill in balancing the practical with the creative to achieve team resolution of issues that impact budget, schedule and constructability. Most recently, Drew developed a cutting edge controls system which enabled the North Richland Hills Recreation Centre to pursue LEED Gold certification and with lower installation costs than a traditional system.


Drew earned his Bachelor of Science in Architectural Engineering from the University of Colorado, Boulder and leads the Dallas office of the firm.

Toufic is an electrical engineer who brings over 20 years of professional experience in science and industry, with direct critical technology efforts that include designing and supporting production and development environments, performance tuning and optimization, system monitoring and balancing. Additionally, he provides contract review, resource management, and peer review, with a portfolio of more 45 published papers as well as studies of impact on atmosphere and natural resources. He provides a very practical and realistic knowledge of systems in addition to an extensive theoretical understanding of Green Building design and high performance construction.


Toufic is the Director of the firm’s Middle East office. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Engineering & Technology from Lebanese University with advanced degrees in Science and Signal Processing and an International MBA from Denver University.

Mohit Mehta

Principal & Director of Sustainable Design

Mohit is the firm’s Director of Sustainable Design and works with design teams from concept through construction to set goals and develop a framework for incorporating sustainability strategies into all aspects of a project’s design. Engaged in sustainable design research and analysis on high-performance buildings for a decade, he is knowledgeable in environmentally responsive building practices, materials, and site design that promote comfortable, energy-efficient and healthy buildings. Mohit has lectured and written on the integration of energy and sustainable design principles into urban planning and building design, and undertaken research on a variety of climate-adaptive strategies.


Mohit graduated from the New Delhi School of Planning and Architecture with a Bachelor of Architecture and holds a Master of Science in Building Design from Arizona State University.

Joy Yamada, IALD, LEED AP
Principal & Director, Lighting Design Studio

Joy is a Senior Associate and Director of Lighting who provides the organizational force within the firm to assure that design work is on schedule and within the client’s program objectives. Her experience in the design and management of architectural projects provides a unique perspective in the design process, and she has produced award winning designs for a breadth of work. Joy has taught lighting design, and continues to promote lighting design education and awareness through professional affiliations.


Joy was educated at the University of Colorado in the field of Architectural Engineering.

Austin Simmons, PE
Principal

Mr. Simmons is a Technology Project Manager in the Denver Office and lead engineer for Technology Integration Services, Community Master Planning, and Dry Utilities Planning and Coordination work. He is responsible for managing the project team, system design and construction administration specifically to telecommunications infrastructure master planning and coordination. Mr. Simmons is a specialist in the design of technology systems with experience in communications support structures (raceway), communications cabling (copper and fiber optic media), electrical systems, and utility service coordination.


Austin graduated from the University of Colorado with a Bachelor of Science in Architectural Engineering.

Director, Kansas City

Jeff is a Senior Associate and Project Manager responsible for the design of HVAC and plumbing systems with particular expertise in HVAC & hydronic system design for large-scale commercial projects including pharmaceutical, collegiate, and the sports & entertainment industry.


In addition to his technical expertise and project experience, Jeff brings a fun and unique perspective to any project team he works with. His passion for his clients and his projects is evident through his genuine love of the job, and he is always willing to ‘go the extra mile to meet his clients’ needs and expectations.


Jeff has a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Missouri and serves as the Director for the Kansas City office of the firm.

Elliot Millican, PE
Director, Houston

Elliot is a Senior Associate in our Houston office. He is responsible for project management, mechanical design and production. Specializing in custom designs for healthcare facilities, research laboratories, industrial applications and central plants, Elliot is skilled at evaluating project conditions and needs and designing unique solutions that balance cost, safety and performance. His recent LEED projects include the Certified DPS Crime Lab and the LEED Gold Houston Permitting Center at 1002 Washington. He is currently serving as President for the ASHRAE Houston Chapter and has been involved as an officer since 2008. In 2010 he was named the ASHRAE Houston YEA (Young Engineer in ASHRAE) Member of the year.


Elliot graduated from Texas A&M University with a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering and leads the firm’s Houston office.

Kevin is a Principal and Director of Wireless Technology Design. He interfaces with owners, architects, contractors, wireless providers, and other consultants to help facilitate project program and budget expectations, pricing review, design coordination, production of construction documents, and construction oversight. Kevin has a wide range of project experience, with emphasis on professional and collegiate sports venues. His technical experience includes design of communications infrastructure, wireless data networks (Wi-Fi/WLAN), distributed antenna systems (DAS), security systems, and AV systems. His appreciation for seamlessly coordinating technology systems with the building’s architecture and his ability to facilitate coordination among all project stakeholders is invaluable.

Dave Groulx
Principal

Dave is a Principal specializing in plumbing systems. His 30 years of experience has included managing and engineering plumbing systems and fire protection design with specialties such as lab gasses, process piping, and chemical fire suppression systems. He has been a key resource in major sports projects such as the Madison Square Garden Transformation, Citi Field, and the Atlanta Braves Stadium


Dave possesses a technical degree from Phoenix College of Gulfport, MS.

Jeremy is a Principal in our Colorado Springs office and has been with ME Engineers since 2003. As the Director of Revit Development and Implementation, he has overseen the adoption of Revit standards and practices firm wide. His experience encompasses a broad range of commercial, education, worship, healthcare facilities and many military installations for which he has significant experience in complying with AT/FP standards and design practices.


Jeremy earned his Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from the Colorado School of Mines.
