ME Team's Habitat for Humanity Project

A team of ME employees visited a local Habitat for Humanity site for some hands-on experience turning one of our designs inta a finished product, converting a 100-year-old church into a new two-unit condo. What started with an afternoon visit to do some demolition work evolved into a volunteer effort to design the building to Passive House Standards which address energy consumption and greenhouse gases beyond the building.

For this project, we developed multiple models of the building to test different approaches in search of the ideal mix of performance and cost. The models estimated annual and peak energy consumption for the building, both of which must fall below the established thresholds to earn certification.

ACEC Diamond Award

ACEC Diamond Award for Stem Building

Members of the Dwight Englewood STEM project team received the ACEC Engineering Excellence Award for Building Technology Systems. Each year, engineering firms are recognized for their achievements in outstanding design across seven different categories. Over 60 firms submit projects which are judged based on their complexity, innovation and value to society.

The new STEM building is meant to simulate real world scenarios and allow for the teaching of multiple scientific disciplines. It supports an integrated science, technology, engineering and math education by presenting students with real life challenges related to two or more of these fields.

When designing STEM spaces, architects and engineers aren’t just providing schools with classroom space, but rather a collaborative learning environment for solving some of today’s toughest challenges.

Buffalo Marriott HarborCenter Opens

The last phase of Buffalo’s new HarborCenter opened with the 205-key Marriott hotel. The 650,000-square-foot development includes 2 NHL standard ice rinks, a 5-level parking garage, restaurant and mini-mall.
The 12-story hotel is stacked above the parking structure and ice sheets which began construction a year before construction documentation began on the hotel. This required precise pre-planning of penetrations, shafts and chases that provided the appropriate utility pathways for the hotel MEP/T systems.
The programmatic layout added design complexities as well. Having ice slabs elevated on the 6th floor of the structure required creative solutions to limit condensation on the surfaces below. These included the unusual step of performing computational fluid dynamics analysis for the parking structure below the ice.

Madison Square Garden Transformation Earns ACEC Award

Madison Square Garden Transformation Earns ACEC Award

The Garden’s $1B transformation was recognized by the American Council of Engineering Companies with a Platinum Award for Engineering Excellence.
Renovations were completed in 3 phases with discreet season work followed by an aggressive pace in off seasons. The work was designed and phased to maintain critical symmetrical loading of the building’s structural cables that support MEP equipment. The added weight of the modernization necessitated careful realignment of equipment from center roof to the edges. While new systems integrated seamlessly with existing and with work in progress, the transitions were one of the most complex aspects of the project.

The reliability and flexibility of the power system was enhanced by adding a spot network. The team showed its creativity in locating space for it in a ‘found’ building setback, threading high voltage conduits through a subway, Amtrak spaces and Penn Station.
Business Journal Highlights Medical Milestone, the Hybrid OR

Business Journal Highlights Medical Milestone, the Hybrid OR

Northridge Hospital’s Hybrid OR was the first of its kind in Southern California. These suites support sophisticated imaging techniques which allow surgeons to perform complex minimally invasive procedures with less trauma and faster recoveries.

Hospitals retrofitting an existing space will encounter design challenges beyond those of a conventional OR. With added imaging systems the typical suite is roughly twice the size of a typical OR and requires larger teams. They use more utilities, require more shielding, and may need more structural support. Experts recommend hospitals work with planners seasoned in Hybrid OR design and run exercises with staff to choreograph the positions and movements of people, equipment and patients.

ME Engineers also designed hybrid suites for Cedars Sinai, West Anaheim Medical Center, and Westchester Medical Center.
